Sandpiper January Blog Post: Fleas & Ticks

Fleas and ticks are a threat to humans and animals year-round in Florida. Not only do these pests cause pain from their bites, but they also have the potential to transmit harmful diseases.

The Difference Between Fleas & Ticks

There are some key differences that set fleas and ticks apart from one another. In terms of size, ticks are larger than fleas. Ticks are slightly smaller than an apple seed in size, growing up to 1/4" in length. However, ticks have the potential to appear even larger than this as they swell with blood after a meal. After a bloodmeal, ticks can swell to a size of about 3/8", and even can turn grey in color. Adult fleas are very small to the naked eye, they are

approximately 1/8" long. Fleas are insects and have 6 legs, with two hind legs that are extra long for jumping. Ticks have 8 legs and are actually not insects, they are a part of the arachnid family. Fleas, unlike ticks, must always have a host to survive.

Flea & Tick Prevention

Wearing proper clothing while outdoors will help prevent fleas and ticks from being able to bite or catch a ride home with you. Avoid wearing shirts with short sleeves and shorts in wooded areas or areas with long grass. Instead, opt for some long-sleeved shirts and pants, especially if you are going to be somewhere with dense vegetation. Additionally, you can prepare with bug repellent before heading outdoors. After spending time outdoors, check yourself and your companions over for any signs of ticks or fleas trying to hitchhike home with you. To protect your home from fleas, it is important to keep a clean environment. Frequent vacuuming of the home, especially carpeted areas, will help cut down your chances of an infestation starting.

Pet Protection

Flea and tick bites can transmit diseases and can cause tapeworm infections in your pet. The saliva from these pests' bites can also cause what is known as flea allergy dermatitis, which

results in itching, scabbing, and hair loss in animals. There are several ways you can help protect your pet against fleas and ticks. One of the best ways to be on guard against these vectors is to have your pet on a veterinarian-recommended flea and tick prevention medication. It is best to have them on this year-round in Florida as flea and tick season lasts all year here. Another way to help your pet is to check their coat after any outdoor time for pests. Regular bathing of your animals will also help decrease the chance of them getting fleas.
